The next generation of the world’s most popular hybrid vehicle will be unveiled by Toyota in Geneva today. Featuring a power increase of 22 per cent, improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions, the new Prius will be sold in 80 countries, almost doubling its current market.

The first-generation Prius was the first mass-produced hybrid vehicle in the world. Launched in Japan in 1997 and in Europe in 2000, the Prius has become synonymous with fuel-efficiency and environmental conscientiousness, thanks in no small part to celebrity endorsement and very successful marketing.

Coinciding with the European debut Andrea Formica, Senior Vice President of Toyota Motor Europe said:

“The new-generation Prius is the most advanced mainstream car on the market. Prius builds on more than 10 years of history and will remain the undisputed reference point for hybrid technology.”

90 per cent of the Prius’s hybrid drive components have been redesigned to in an effort to create a lighter, smaller system, as well as aiming to increase power and reduce fuel consumption. System power has been increased by 22 per cent to 134bhp, fuel economy improved by 10 per cent to 72.4mg and CO2 emissions reduced by 14 per cent to just 89g/km.

Other developments include a solar ventilation system, pre-crash safety system and parking assist feature.

By the end of 2008 worldwide sales of the Prius were over 1.2 million, with European sales nearing 130,000. The car was voted European Car of the Year 2005 and its Hybrid Synergy Drive powertrain was named 2004 International Engine of the Year. With the rise of alternative technologies and other competitors in the segment, Prius’s status as the reference point for environmental consciousness is under threat, but Toyota hope that the new generation Prius will ensure the model’s position over the next financial year.
