Serbian President Boris Tadic has admitted in a district court that he broke a law against drinking alcohol in a sports stadium - but in his defence says he doesn't even like champagne!

The court appearance came after Tadic and other officials were photographed raising a toast to mark Serbia's victory in a World Cup qualifying match against Romania in October.

"I even don't like champagne, but I took a sip,"Tadic told the judge at a Belgrade municipal court. "I was not aware I was violating the law when I drank the champagne."

Serbian law bans the consumption of alcoholic drinks within five km radius of a stadium. If found guilty later this month Tadic said he would pay the fine of up to 50,000 dinars ($900).

Tadic said he will not use his right to immunity granted to high ranking officials.

"It was very unpleasant to be in the court for violating the law," Tadic told reporters after the hearing. "I don't think I will be proposing a toast in the future."
