Japanese lady Kama Chinen passed away at her care home on the island of Okinawa aged 114 on Sunday (02.05.10).
Kama was only one week away from reaching her 115th birthday and her family have not released any further details of her death.
The title of the world's oldest person has now gone to 114-year-old Frenchwoman Eugenie Blanchard.
People who live on Okinawa have one of the highest life expectancies in the world with five times as many Okinawans living to be 100 than the rest of Japan.
The long lifespan is credited to the diet of the islanders which consists of low salt and low fat foods, including fish, tofu, and seaweed.
