A woman in New Zealand reportedly found a piece of fruit with a demonic face carved on it when she opened a can of budget pear halves.Wendy McMahon bought the tinned fruit from Invercargill Pak'N Sav and discovered the unusual halved pear on May 1, The Southland Times reports.
McMahon said: "I thought, 'Oh my God, is that a face'... it really kind of shocked me."
She later called an 0800 number on the tin and left a message before posting photographs of the pear on the TV3, Facebook and Trade Me.
When her call was returned by Safeway Traders Ltd in Auckland, McMahon claimed that the company denied the carving was possible due to its automated manufacturing process and became angry that she had "gone public" with the images.
However, she received a letter last Thursday containing NZ$15 (£7.25) before being asked to send back the pear for investigation by manufacturer Heinz-Wattie. The following day the company conceded that the pear could have been carved during manual quality control checks and offered her NZ$30, which she refused.
"I said that wasn't good enough, then she turned on me and got nasty again," McMahon said. "She said 'You're just after money aren't you?' - I asked her to send the pear back."
