Recycled islands, floating islandsDesigners have revealed plans to create a habitable island out of 44,000tonnes of rubbish which is currently floating in the Pacific Ocean.

It's claimed 'Recycled Island' could house up to 500,000 people and would be created by recycling plastics in the North Pacific Gyre into interconnected hollow blocks.

The Dutch team say the island would be able to generate power using solar and wave energy would also help to clean the oceans of plastic pollution.

Recycled islands, floating islandsDifferent areas of the 3,861 square mile would have designated roles such as accommodation, farming, and tourism… because this sounds like the ideal holiday destination, right?

A spokesperson for WHIM architecture, the team behind the audacious plan, said: "We have three main aims; Cleaning our oceans from a gigantic amount of plastic waste; Creating new land; And constructing a sustainable habitat.

"Recycled island seeks the possibilities to recycle the plastic waste on the spot and to recycle it into a floating entity.

"The constructive and marine technical aspects take part in the project of creating a sea worthy island."
