A man has free-climbed a San Francisco skyscraper using nothing more than suction cups to help him cling to the glass structure.

Dan Goodwin, 54, a well-known skyscraper climber from Lake Tahoe, scaled the 58-storey Millennium Tower, ignoring all demands from police to stop.

Firefighters were called to the scene, but he was too high by the time they arrived and they could not reach him.

The busy street below was closed while police and firemen monitored his progress.

Mr Goodwin finally reached the top of the residential building overlooking San Francisco Bay more than three hours after he began the ascent.

He unfurled an American flag then handed himself in to waiting police who arrested him on charges of trespassing and public nuisance.

Known as "Skyscraper Man" Mr Goodwin has scaled other famous buildings over the years including the Sears Tower in 1981 and the World Trade Centre in 1983.

He claims he climbed the Millennium Tower to call attention to skyscrapers' continuing vulnerability to terrorist attacks and to raise awareness of cancer.

He was diagnosed with cancer in 2001 and claims that due to his illness he was unable to fulfil a promise to train the US military to climb the World Trade Centre - something he believes could have saved lives during the September 11 attacks.

On his website he quotes Spider-Man creator Stan Lee: "If you are able to do something that will do good, that will help people, you damn well oughta do it."
